Google Store: Buy One, Get One 50% Off All Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL

Take better selfies with a new phone from the Google Store, because when you buy a Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL, you can get another one for 50% off!

Originally unveiled on October 9, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL feature a 5.5" or 6.3" OLED display, respectively, a Snapdragon 845 processor, 4GB of RAM, a single 12.2 MP rear camera, dual 8MP front cameras and come with Android 9 Pie installed. Both models are available in three colours -- Clearly White, Just Black and Not Pink -- with 64GB or 128GB of storage.

We've listed pricing for each storage option below -- simply add any two configurations to your cart and the 50% discount will apply automatically to the lesser-priced model.

If you're in the market for one phone instead of two, it's best to wait until Black Friday, as Google has revealed their Black Friday 2018 deals and you can take up to $250.00 off the Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL starting November 22.

This offer is effective online only until November 21 and all Pixel 3/3 XL configurations are eligible for free shipping.

Google says ‘Dark Mode’ helps save considerably more battery life

Dark Mode

At Google’s Android Dev Summit, the search giant shared a slideshow image that shows how much battery power a phone’s screen uses in various colours.

At the low end of the spectrum is a black screen that draws somewhere around 50mA to 60mA of power. On the extreme top end of the chart, a white screen draws over 300mA.

The tests were done on Google’s original Pixel smartphone, according to The Verge.

What is most perplexing about these findings is that Google’s first-party apps are full of bright white space. Granted, some apps do feature a dark mode, such as Messages and News, but most are still white only.

The search giant shared a comparison of two phones running YouTube at varying degrees of brightness and the device rocking dark mode uses 60 percent less power than an ordinary app with a white screen when the phone’s display brightness is set to maximum.

Themers have been screaming this for years. I wonder what the stats look like for ads vs. blocking ads.

Free Flickr accounts slashed to 1,000 pictures; the rest will be deleted

Free Flickr accounts slashed to 1,000 pictures; the rest will be deleted

Venerable photo sharing site Flickr has announced that from January 8, 2019, free accounts will be limited to 1,000 photos or videos. Any content above that limit will be deleted, starting February 5, 2019, beginning with the oldest images first. To go beyond the 1,000 item limit, you'll have to pay $50/year for Flickr Pro.

Created in 2004, Flickr was bought by Yahoo in 2005. The original model was that free accounts were limited to 200 pictures, with payment required to go beyond this limit. During Yahoo's ownership, free Flickr accounts were made more and more capable, with the biggest change coming in 2013, when free accounts were given 1TB of total space. Yahoo was bought by Verizon in 2017, and in April of this year, Flickr was sold to SmugMug, another photo hosting site.

Flickr's new owners say that the change is being made to better concentrate on what Flickr should be: a community for photographers to store, showcase, and talk about their work. Expanding storage to 1TB for free accounts brought in the wrong kind of users—not people who loved photography, but rather people attracted by a large bitbucket they could dump files into.

PSA: after 11 years of continuous uploads, have over 11,000 family photos on Flickr. Even with a dated interface, it's still one of the best photo platforms around. It was just that far ahead of the curve. Will probably re-implement my pro-account. Hopefully this move will stimulate service improvements.

Google upgrading SD and HD Google Play Movies to 4K for free

Google Play Store icon on Android phone

Those who have purchased movies through Google Play Movies & TV can expect a 4K upgrade for free.

“When 4K titles are available from participating Hollywood studios, we’ll upgrade your past movie purchases so you can stream in 4K, even if you originally bought the movie in SD or HD,” said Google in a statement.

When you open the Play Movies & TV app, Google will notify you indicating which specific titles have been upgraded.

Additionally, starting now Google Play 4K movies will also cost less, though Google hasn’t indicated how much less.

The Google Play Movies and TV app on 4K Samsung Smart TVs will now also stream 4K content. Additionally, Google is working on 4K support for LG TV as well.

Lastly, with Samsung, LG and Vizio TVs, Google has updated the Play Movie & TV app’s appearance to look more modern with a revamped user interface.

It’s worth noting that Apple also upgraded HD content to 4K that has been purchased through the company’s Movies and TV app.

This is the biggest advantage digital streaming has over disk media. It doesn't make any sense to ask for people to re-purchase it digitally.
